Gears of War 3 101 – Episode 2
Here’s episode 2 in the very informative 101 series of tutorials:
A bunch of great information. I’ve learned a lot. Here’s the gist…
Wall bouncing is an entirely new technique, never-before-seen in any game besides Gears of War. Adding a brand new element to shotgun battles, utilizing wall bouncing will give you the advantage by allowing you to dodge and evade bullets and enemies in ways your opponents can never expect.
The key to wall bouncing is to use it randomly in combination with strafes and other evasion techniques. You need to be inconsistent and unpredictable so that your opponents can never tell where you’ll be next, and you’ll have the perfect opportunity to take them out.
Also, there’s no winning a 1 on 2 or 1 on 3 face-off without using this essential method.
So, how do you wall bounce?
Hold A and press the analogue stick in the direction of the cover you want to move towards to quickly move to a wall and then immediately pull away from the cover. The resulting movement is extremely fast and difficult to follow when used correctly. Remember to combine with strafing. This makes you a very difficult target to hit.
With the Gnasher Shotgun you get further range better accuracy, but less damage. A very tradition shotgun great for taking on multiple enemies. You’ll have 8 shells loaded to begin with, then 16 left over after those are used. You can probably take out someone at medium range with only 2 shots.
A brand new addition to the Gears of War arsenal, this shotgun is perfect for short range, in-your-face encounters. It’s best for 1 on 1 battles nut is entirely useless past a certain range. It’s got a very wide spread, but does zero damage if you’re too far. Test it out to get a feel for the damage and range. If you can get close, do it… because you only need time to squeeze in one trigger pull to completely destroy your enemy.
Choose your shotgun based on your play style. Run-and-gun type players should go for the Sawed off Shotgun, and other players should go for the Gnasher.
And lastly, the more you play with each weapon and style, the more you will learn all those tweaks and tricks that will give you the advantage to take your Gears game to the next level.

Gears of War 3 101
Found a great video series explaining some interesting techniques for improving your Gears game.
First Video goes over the basics.
Customization – Choosing your preferred weapons, selecting your characters, and customizing controller.
Weapons – Choose the weapons that fit your play style.
Sawed Off Shotgun and Retro Lancer – Ideal for aggressive, close encounter players.
Gnasher Shotgun and Hammerburst – For conventional players who wish to keep their distance.
Character Selection – There’s no difference between characters except in size. Pick the Smallest Character who’s hardest to target. Don’t pick a character simply based on their voice or looks.
Kantus for Locusts
Anya for COG
Customize Controller Settings – Tweak sensitivity and button layout until you are most comfortable. Anything for that slight edge.
Cover – Gears of War is a cover-based game. Using it is essential. Using it properly will secure your advantage.
Always use cover to the left of your character. Each character is right handed, and your third-person viewpoint will always be over their right shoulder. This means that your view will always be ideal when you use cover on your left side.
Jump over cover to get an easy kill. If you’re sharing cover with an enemy, be the first to leap over the obstacle to land right on top of them. A new game mechanic stuns your enemy as you do this, so execution is easy.
Strategy and Teamwork – You won’t often get away with being completely independent in Gears of War 3. Team work is essential. You’ll have a great advantage if you play with people you know. Invite your friends, find people online on youtube or in forums. Always run with a squad of at least 5.
Use the spotting feature. By clicking the left stick while focused on an enemy, you mark the opponent for the rest of your team. Use this to take out troublesome players effectively. Having the ability to overwhelm the other players at will give your team the great upper hand.
And finally… Practice!
Familiarize yourself with every aspect of the game, especially the maps. You’ll have a rough time at first, but just play more often, and you’ll see that things become second nature.

It does look very tempting. No one will bother to think less of you… or at least you won’t bother to notice, because you’ll be too busy playing the game. But it’s OK. I don’t blame you. Just don’t go pressing the power button all reckless or something… it’s not indestructible.
In fact, you’re not the craziest fan of Gears of War. There’s a youtube user who was sent a bunch of free Gears merchandise by Epic Games just for being such a freak. All he did was dance around in front of the camera. I don’t understand. I’ll make a post about that soon and you can definitely check it out. The package looks pretty fantastic. Given that the Octus Service medal the code is engraved into is also a very well made, exact match replica of the actual medal, the potential value in reselling it will be quite substantial. Gears of War 3 Beta
The beta is over if you happen to be looking to find a Gears of War 3 beta key. It started April 25th and ended May 15th, but there’s been a great reveal of information about the multi-player features during that time. New modes, maps, Gears of War 3 plans to surpass the multi-player features of Gears of War 2 and has definitely delivered. This is the most anticipated game of 2011 and while the story will be an epic and satisfying conclusion to this story arc, the online scene is why we love Gears of War
All in all, we know from the Gears of War 3 beta that it will play like the old Gears games. Yet still, there are appreciable adjustments, the most significant being that the controls have been changed ever so slightly. Launching with the Gears 2 control scheme will not suffice, and it might require some learning and practice to become accustomed to the new scheme. The developers know that in previous games, players accidentally take an action when attempting to do something else, so the new controls should resolve this problem.
Some of the changes specific to face buttons are the X button is now the “use” button, and used to revive players, as well. Holding down the X button will grab a gun from the map. Hitting the Y button will be for viscous boot stomping on a fallen player, and holding down the Y button is for the extended execution.
Executions are upgradeable and will land you bonus XP, as well. The special executions are pretty gruesome, but terrific. Here’s an HD compilation of each one…
Some of the animations take a while, but the benefit of executions is that they’re now incentivized. Extra points will be given the longer you hold the execution, which will make for some fun mid-fire fight strategic decisions. Being able to charge and impale others will be a surprise that will probably never get old. There’s an execution for every weapon, except for the Snub Pistol.
And the new weapons look very impressive, as well. Plus, the Gears of War 3 beta has confirmed the addition of a weapon load-out which you can change after death or after every round for the modes with no re-spawning. You’ll still find special weapons on the map too. Here’s an overview of the new weapon load-out and some of the new weapons:
The Hammerburst now has an iron sight, so it’ll be super-effective for long range. Plus, there’s a great selection of new weapons. A double-barreled, sawed off shotgun will no doubt be the killer close-range choice and useless for closing larger distances. The One Shot is an enormous sniper rifle with a laser. The Retro Lancer can be used for impalement, as I will surely enjoy. The Digger is an interesting weapon which drills underground to find enemies and explode out of their chest. Also, incendiary grenades that stick to meat shields.
There’s lots more to go over, including the intriguing new multi-player modes. I’ll be updating this site with more information gleaned from the Gears of War 3 beta.
